AI Safety Needs Professional Standards and Continuous Validation

At Safe Intelligence, we welcome the BCS’s call for rigorous safety testing and accountability in the deployment of AI systems.

As agentic systems gain the ability to act autonomously and interact with other agents, principled, extensive and deep validation becomes essential. Evaluation must consider the behaviour of the complete system, including its tools, operating environment and interactions.

We believe this calls for an engineering-based approach to the problem: systematic validation grounded in computer science, with explicit safety requirements, reproducible testing that can be independently scrutinized.

Validation should continue throughout the system’s life cycle. Changes to models, tools and deployment environments can introduce new failure modes. Assurance is not a once and forget action, it is a continuous activity that evolves alongside the system.

Professional standards can help turn these practices into clear expectations regarding how private and public organizations can deploy AI responsibly.

We welcome the conversation BCS is advancing and the emphasis on making AI safety an accountable engineering practice.
